Dear friend,
For us, believers in the Word of God, the greatest human being of all time is our Lord Jesus Christ. It is revealed clearly in Holy Scriptures that He is given a name which is above every name, both in Heaven and on earth. It is revealed that He is the One Who will sit in Judgment at the Final Judgment before the coming of the New Heaven and the New Earth. His Name is called "the King of kings" and "Lord of lords". God's infallible Word is very clear as the identity of the greatest human being.
The life of such a great man was not without suffering. In fact, He was destined to become great through sufferings. Prophet Isaiah called this coming Great One, "a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief." (Isa. 53:3) Hebrews 2:10 declares: "It became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings."
When He was on earth, He walked among people who suffered and "wept" with them. (Joh. 11:35) For Him, obedience is learned through sufferings - "Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered." (Heb. 5:8) People who obey only in things convenient, do not truly know what is sacrificial obedience. Christ's obedience to His Father involved great sufferings on His part. (Phi. 2:5-8) Isa. 50:5, 6 revealed His submission to God: "I was not rebellious, neither turned away back. I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting."
All the ill-treatments our Saviour ever experienced, He did not deserve one bit of it, for He is always perfect without sin. Yet, He opened not His mouth when thus unfairly treated. Why? While He did not deserve such treatments personally, He knew that we (whom He represents) do indeed deserve every bit of it. So, in all His sufferings He has no complaints, but still love His God and Father in true humility and lowliness of mind.
What must you and I do, the next time we suffer in our pilgrimage? (Heb. 12:1-13)
